If your skin gives an unwanted shine and clogs the pores, it means that it is oily. Our skin produces natural oils that protect it from dust, dirt and other skin problems. But what if it produces extra oils and you want to get rid of it? Oily skin may cause acne, blackheads, and other skin problems.

Factors that cause oily skin issues

  • Genetic issues: If your mother or father had oily skin, it is likely that you will have it too
  • Age factor: If you are a teenager, oily skin is a very common issue
  • Hormones: Some women face oily skin issues during their periods and pregnancy
  • Stress: During stressful times, oiliness of the skin may increase
  • Diet: Greasy and oily food causes oily skin
  • Over-scrubbing and washing: Don't over wash your face. Wash it only two or three times a day. Use only gentle scrubbers to exfoliate skin

15 tips to get rid of oily skin issues

Wondering how to stop oily skin from deteriorating your beauty? Here are some simple ways that will help you change your skin from greasy to a glowing one:

1. Use a gentle cleanser

Wash your face using a gentle cleanser to avoid any kind of irritation. Harsh cleansers can damage your skin and cause it to produce extra oil. If a gentle cleanser doesn't work for you, try a cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide and beta-hydroxy acid. Stay away from harsh soaps to avoid irritation and other problems. Always use mild soaps to cleanse your face.

2. Don't scrub your face too hard

Scrubbing your face with a harsh cloth or textured sponge may irritate your skin. Scrubbing causes the skin to produce excess oil. You must apply gentle pressure while scrubbing the face with a hand towel.

3. Wash your face twice a day

Washing your face twice a day is essential to keep the oil production by skin under control. Wash your face after waking up and before going to bed using a gentle cleanser.

4. Wash your face with warm water

Hot water can damage the skin and cause it to produce extra oil. It may irritate the skin; so use warm water to wash your face.

5. Use toner on the oily parts of skin

If you use toner on your entire face, it may create dry patches that often become red. Target only the oily areas of your face and leave out the normal areas. Apply toner on the T-zone of your forehead and nose. This will tighten the pores and remove oil. Always apply toner lightly with cotton balls.

6. Use astringent pads on the go

You can't wash your face when you are in office or not at home. Astringent pads are useful in removing excess oil when you can't wash your face at times. Keep a pack of astringent pads in your handbag if you have oily skin. You can also choose medicated pads to fight oily skin issues.

7. Use clay masks

Clay masks are the best to remove excess oil from the skin. Go for clay mask treatments on special occasions when you need oil-free skin for a long time. You can apply multani mitti face packs once in a week or two.

8. Use a deep cleansing face mask to remove excess oil

Facial masks provide deeper cleansing than your normal face wash. They remove dirt, impurities and extra oil deeply. You should use a facial mask after cleansing your face with your regular cleanser. Use a face mask once a week. Keep it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Use water and soft wash-cloth to gently remove the mask.

9. Moisturize your skin very carefully

  • Avoid moisturizers containing petroleum and butter: These ingredients add extra oil to your skin and worsen the problem. Always read the list of ingredients listed on the pack of the moisturizer you are buying. Choose a moisturizer which is oil-free

  • Use oil free moisturizers: Some people don't use moisturizers and sunscreens as they think it will add more oil to the skin. But if you choose the right products, it would be beneficial for the skin. Oily skin needs extra protection from UV rays

  • Use moisturizer sparingly: Always apply only a thin layer of moisturizer to your skin

  • Try different moisturizers until you find the best one: Only certain moisturizers work well for oily skin. If someone is using XYZ moisturizer, it doesn't mean it will work well for you too. You should always try a sample before buying

10. Avoid oil based cosmetics

You should always avoid oil based cosmetics, don't forget to remove your makeup and before going to bed. It settles in your skin and will clog them.

11. Eat a healthy diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants

Avoid foods high in fats and sugar. For antioxidants, eat foods like cranberries, apples, whole grains, blueberries and spinach. Take walnuts and flex seeds for omega-3 fatty acids. Eat natural foods and avoid greasy foods.

12. Exercise regularly

Physical activity provides additional benefits to the skin. It improves blood flow, helps in getting healthy skin and provides a nice glow.

13. Meditate daily to eliminate stress

There is direct relationship between your mental health and skin health. If your mind is fresh and you are positive, it will reflect on your skin too. Practice daily meditation to get glowing and healthy skin. Yoga, practiced along with meditation is an excellent stress buster and can eliminate all sorts of health issues.

14. Sleep 8 hours regularly

Sleep for 8 hours every night. Our body renews and revives skin while sleeping. Lack of sleep will cause dark circles around the eyes and hasten the onset of wrinkles.

15. Drink plenty of water

Hydration is the best way to maintain healthy skin. Doctors recommend 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Inadequate water may cause breakouts, wrinkles, dull skin and dehydration. Drink lemon water to stay hydrated as it is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.

By improving your diet and changing your lifestyle, you can reduce your skin's oil production to a great extent.  Hope these tips are beneficial for you. Consult a dermatologist or a medical practitioner to get more information to get rid of oily skin issues.
