There are many situations that can lead a person to feel low, sad, and lonely. From losing a job, a loved one to divorce and abusive relationships or, break ups, any difficult situation can cause depression. However, people often take those feelings lightly and ignore their mental health. Yes, it is normal to feel sad in difficult situations, but you may be depressed if you keep feeling down or miserable for more than a few weeks.
Here are a few signs that tell you are suffering from depression.
1. Anger and irritability
If you get angry over small things and constantly remain irritable, it could be a symptom of depression. It is seen mostly in teenagers and parents think that it is normal for children of this age. However, it could be a sign of depression which needs treatment.
2. No sleep or sleeping too much
No matter how tired you are, if you are undergoing depression, you will find it difficult to sleep. And, if you are not tired, and still you do not want to get out of your bed, it may again be a sign of depression.
3. No energy, always feeling tired
No matter how much rest you give to your body, you don’t feel like getting out of bed. You spend more hours in bed throughout the day and find it difficult to do normal tasks because of fatigue or tiredness. You feel like lying or sitting at one place for long. There will be no energy to do anything. Even a small work like keeping your clothes in almirah will seem like
a big task to you.
4. Feelings of emptiness all the time
Though it is common to feel low or empty at times; feeling this way all the time and finding reasons to feel unhappy, hopeless, and thinking that nothing will get better could be the signs of depression. Those who suffer from depression often feel unworthy and sad without any reason.
5. Change in appetite
People suffering from depression would either eat too much or too little. As a result, they will either gain or lose weight because of change in appetite. Watch out for these changes in your eating habits.
6. Restlessness and anxiety
If you know someone who is always restless and finds it difficult to sit at one place, it could be a sign of depression. People with too much anxiety issues, excessive worrying over small matter should visit a physiatrist as it is a disorder which should be treated.
7. Frequent suicidal thoughts
Now this is the most dangerous symptom of depression. When someone is severely depressed, suicidal thoughts will keep haunting that person and s/he will try to end her life. And, if you or someone you know is experiencing such thoughts, seek help, before it’s late.
8. Difficulty in making decision or remembering things
If you or someone close to you is having memory issues, find it difficult to maintain day-to-day activities due to inability in remembering things, it could be a sign of depression.
9. Feelings unworthy and guilty
Though it is alright to feel guilty or unworthy at times, if you keep holding yourself responsible for everything wrong happening in your or your loved ones’ life, then there is a problem. Thinking negative all the time and blaming yourself for thing that is not your responsibility is not normal.
10. Change in behaviour
You used to be an outgoing person but now withdrawing yourself from your friends or loved ones. You are finding it difficult to do simple tasks at work or school. You are not going out anymore as you used to in the past and not enjoying activities you loved in the past. These are not the signs to be ignored. Seek help. Tell someone you trust. You may be undergoing depression and need treatment.
