Dark chocolate prevents diabetes! Hard to believe? According to a recent study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, points out the presence of certain compounds in dark chocolate which are actually good for a diabetic prone.

Chocolate lovers can consume more of dark chocolates without any fear. But remember, it has to be real dark chocolate not the Indian ones (milk chocolates) which is full of sugar.

Cocoa present in dark chocolate contains a compound called epicatechin monomers. It helps the body to release more insulin and control the increased blood glucose. Hence, cocoa is like a medical boon for the people with the risk of diabetes.

"What happens is epicatechin monomers is protecting the cells, increasing their ability to deal with oxidative stress ," said lead author Jeffery Tessem, assistant professor at Brigham Young University (BYU), US.

For the study, cocoa compound was added to the food of animals that were on a high-fat diet. As a result they found that the level of obesity decreased while the ability to deal with increased blood glucose levels improved.

"The epicatechin monomers are making the mitochondria in the beta cells stronger, which produces more ATP (a cell's energy source), which then results in more insulin being released," Tessem added.

"These results will help us get closer to using these compounds more effectively in foods or supplements to maintain normal blood glucose control and potentially even delay or prevent the onset of Type-2 diabetes," said study co-author Andrew Neilson, assistant professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

This is a great finding which actually helps in fighting diabetes. These lifestyle diseases can be tackled with a little alteration made in our lifestyle itself. With that let us treat ourselves with a bar of yummy dark chocolates.
